Mr. Peter Nedin - Events Director
Peter’s involvement with HERO started when he was asked to drive one of the closing cars on Le Jog, a task he thoroughly enjoyed and says he will miss now that he needs to be nearer the front of the events. Today Peter is the HERO’s Events Director and is responsible for all matters pertaining to all HERO Events. Peter has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked as a consultant in the field of high level vehicle security. He is married to Lynn, HERO’s General & Event Secretary, and has a son and daughter, who are interested in motorsport and can be seen helping on HERO events. Work commitments in running the events organization have meant that he has not competed for a few years, but Peter is developing itchy feet and he and John Surridge (another HERO stalwart, who has done a few events with Peter) have recently been overheard talking about competing again – for fun of course!
Peter got involved in organising events, starting as a marshal, and working his way up to Clerk of the Course. On leaving university he joined Port Talbot Motor Club, a strong and successful club. He was asked to take over the running of the Red Dragon Rally, a well known road rally in the 1970’s, and stayed at the helm for almost ten years. His involvement with the club lead to his appointment as chairman, a post that he occupied for eight years. Peter got involved with other events organised by the club, including a National Championship Stage event (known for many years as The Kayel Graphics) and sat on the ANCRO committee (the Association of National Championship Rally Organisers). His first involvement in classic rallying was on the Edmunds Classic, one of the first competitive classic events to be held in Wales.
Whilst preferring to drive, Peter has competed in both the driver and co-driver seats (being once referred to by a dedicated navigator as one of those rarest of breeds “a driver who could actually read a map! His competing on classic events has always been with the intention of having fun, entering in a variety of vehicles from a 1908 Willys Overlander to a 1951 Wolseley police car, complete with bell.
Brian Whyte - Events Manager
Brian has known Peter and worked alongside him, ‘on and off’ for over 30 years (that long and still talking?), both in the area of motorsport and business. Peter was the Clerk of the Course of the Red Dragon Rally the first year Brian started competing and put Brian in the ‘experts’ category on only his 3rd ever rally – 3 months after his 17th birthday! – Apparently because his co driver was experienced! Although that event was memorable for all the wrong reasons Brian went on to win the Clubs Road Rally Drivers Championship in that year. So perhaps the seeding was justified?
Brian’s role as Events Manager requires him to support the Events Director day to day whilst ensuring the smooth running of the operation. With extensive management and business experience gained over many years through running his own successful retail business, a key player in establishing a major national distribution project, working in the automotive industry and extensive rally event experience, he is ideally qualified to undertake this role.
Brian has, over the years, probably done every job on a rally, forest, tarmac and Classic; from staking a route, marshalling in deepest darkest mid Wales at 3am in snow & ice to driving course car on the Irish Tarmac Series. Amongst others roles he was Chief Marshal on the Edmonds Classic Rally for 3 years and introduced the ‘Flying Marshal’ and was Clerk of the Course for the Port Talbot Novice Rally, in the days when they were turning entries away, for 5 years.
He has competed as a driver on Road events (tarmac), Stages (in the forest) and racing circuits and has navigated on road and stage events. He competed on a few classic events driving during 2010 and navigating in 2011. Other events are planned during 2012 both driving & navigating in the UK and Europe.
