About HERO
Marshals
Welcome to the HERO Marshal’s section.
HERO is a respected leader in its field and organises Reliability Trial (a combination of regularity sections and tests) and Tour events for Vintage, Historic and Classic vehicles.
Whether you are new to rallying or a seasoned marshal of the stage rallying arm of the sport, the world of historic road rallying, in which HERO is a major organiser, can provide an exciting opportunity to get ‘up close and personal’ with competitors and their cars in a friendly, busy but very enjoyable environment.
Marshalling on HERO events allows the marshal to enjoy the sights and sounds of cars from the early years of motor competition through to vehicles from recent history, i.e. up to the 1970’s. Contrasting images of a 1920’s blower Bentley alongside a 1970’s Lotus Elan or a 1930’s Jaguar SS100 next to a 1950’s Land Rover Series 1 (80), are commonplace, both in competition and at rest halts.
Event routes are devised in order to maximise competitor skill and enjoyment along with providing memorable scenic backdrops. Marshals also enjoy the same spectacle by dint of being at control and test locations spread along the event route.
HERO marshals are supported by a Chief Marshal who is on hand to provide pre event information and on event assistance. Also, whether operating at a Timing Point or one of the many different controls along the event route, or helping to run a test, full and clear instructions are provided so that marshals should never be anxious with regard to what is expected of them.
Marshalling for HERO is a very hands on experience with marshals taking charge of their control/test locations ensuring that control boards and test equipment are laid out to pre-provided details and to a pre-determined time schedule. As with all things in life a double check is always worthwhile, therefore, confirmation checks are carried out by travelling officials.
Marshals use Liege timing equipment to record the passage of each competitor along the timed sections and at main controls. This is a simple to use device, which benefits from simple ‘chip’ technology. Marshalling teams are provided with clear operating instructions for these clocks. All timings made are backed up by maintaining written records on pre-supplied event check sheets.
HERO have also made arrangements so Marshals can benefit from the program of the HERO Premier Membership but at a reduced cost.
