Scottish Malts 2010

Reliability Trial & Classic car Tour

6th – 10th September

Over the sea to Skye

With the start and finish at the world famous Turnberry Resort, the 2010 HERO Scottish Malts Classic Reliability Trial and Classic Car Tour will again live up to its reputation as being the premier classic car  event in Scotland.

Open to cars built before 31st December 1981, the “Malts”, as it has come to be known, will follow the successful format of past events with driving tests, regularities and link sections. Lunch is provided on all days of competition, and the long established tradition of siting main controls and tests at stately homes, castles and distilleries will continue.

The time schedule is not too demanding, and navigation is by means of a detailed road book using easy-to-follow Tulip diagrams.

Entrants on the Classic Car Tour cover a shorter route and are provided with a specially printed map book, detailed but simple route directions, and touring notes of places of interest along the way. You are free to visit whichever attractions you wish, but make sure you arrive at the hotel in time for dinner!

The “Malts”, now firmly established as one of the premier classic car events in the UK, will start and finish in 2010 from the world famous Turnberry Luxury Collection Resort. Located on the western side of Scotland and within easy reach of Glasgow & Prestwick airports, the resort will host both the welcome and awards dinners.

Documentation and Scrutineering will take place on Sunday 5th September at the Turnberry where crews will be accommodated in the luxury lodges located within the grounds of the complex. Once the process of signing-on has been completed you are free to enjoy all the facilities the resort can offer, including full access to the spa and leisure complex. Arrangements can also be made for you to go horse riding or to play a round of golf.

Monday 6th September will see the cars being flagged away before the first of two tests within the grounds of the resort. From there the event will follow the successful format of past Malts with competitors covering approximately 200 – 230 miles each day through some of the most spectacular scenery Scotland can offer.
Navigation will be by means of a detailed road book using easy-to follow Tulip diagrams utilising HERO’s simple Jogularity system.

As in previous years there will be driving tests, regularities and link sections to allow both members of the crew to enjoy the scenery. The long established tradition of siting main controls and tests at stately homes, castles and distilleries will continue, as will the collection of a souvenir miniature at ten specific locations along the route.

Crews new to the Malts should not be daunted by the prospect of driving tests. These are enjoyable manoeuvrability tests mainly on asphalt and although set against the clock, you are pitted only against other cars in your class.

The event is open to cars built before 1st Jan 1982 and vehicles will be divided into age categories from vintage to modern classics. Competitors compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals; awarded to crews who do well against the standard set for cars in their classification, plus a variety of special awards including Marque, National, Ecurie and Golden Oldie Team Prizes, the Ladies’ Prize, Most appropriately dressed crew, the Veteran’s Prize and Concourse awards, Absolute Beginner, Spirit of the Rally, the Test pilot’s and Clock-watcher’s Trophies. As always accommodation will be at the best hotels available on route and, although we cannot guarantee that all hotels will match the Turnberry, each hotel selected will be clean, comfortable, offer good food and will have been checked by event officials.

The entry fee of £3,550 for a crew of two (held at 2009 prices) includes the following:

  • Rally participation;
  • Lunch on each day of competition;
  • Six nights’ accommodation (crew of two sharing – supplements available for single rooms) for the nights of Sunday 5th September through Friday 10th September;
  • Evening meals;
  • Welcome dinner;
  • Awards presentation banquet.;
  • Generous awards list;
  • Rally plates and side number plates;
  • Detailed roadbook;
  • Event souvenir apparel and whisky miniatures.

The ever popular Scottish Malts Classic Car Tour will be run in conjunction with the Reliability Trial and is intended for crews looking for a less demanding motoring experience, without the need to undertake regularities and driving tests. You will be provided with a route book detailing the suggested route, but you are free to deviate and visit places of specific interest to you. The two events will come together at lunch and other main controls and you will be eligible for finishers' and other awards.

Special terms are also available for crews wishing to extend their stay at the Turnberry.
