History of Car
One of pre-war Britain’s most successful and popular racers, the Riley Brooklands
was developed from the Riley “Nine” tourer. The 1087 cc, twin cam, inline-4 engine was tuned with a high performance water pump, high compression pistons, a racing camshaft, balanced exhaust manifold and uprated, twin carburettors. This pushed the engine to produce what was then an astounding 50 bhp.
This engine was mated to a shortened, lightened chassis from the “nine” tourer which was then slung on extremely low suspension. Clothed in an ash framed steel or alloy body, which in racing form was built without doors for greater strength, it proved a highly competitive package for its class (G). The success of the model was instant – it quickly became a legend at the Brooklands circuit (where it got its name ) -clocking up countless wins with many drivers. In 1934, a Riley won the Rudge Whitworth cup at Le Mans, cementing its place in the list of all time great racing cars.
